Why “Switching the Pool Off for Winter” Is Often a False Economy

Pool Maintenance

Every year, as the weather cools down, we hear the same thing from pool owners:

“We won’t be swimming over winter, so shall we switch everything off to save some money?”

On the surface, that sounds logical.

No swimming. No heating. No chemicals. No need for servicing… right?

But unfortunately, swimming pools don’t really work that way.

A pool is a living body of water, and the moment circulation, sanitation, and regular water care stop, the water chemistry begins drifting out of balance. Before long, algae takes hold, surfaces stain, equipment suffers, and what was once a beautiful, healthy, clean and sanitised swimming pool starts looking like Shrek’s Swamp!

For many pool owners, the cost of reopening the pool properly in spring ends up being significantly more expensive than simply maintaining it correctly year-round.

Green Pool Recovery Is Rarely Cheap

When a pool goes green, recovery is often far more involved than people expect.

It is not usually as simple as “throwing a bit of chlorine in.”

A proper recovery may involve:

  • large volumes of chemicals and shock dosing
  • phosphate treatments
  • algaecides and flocculants
  • 24 hours filtration run times
  • extended backwashes
  • repeated vacuuming and cleaning
  • cartridge cleaning or media replacement
  • staining treatment
  • balancing highly unstable water chemistry
  • additional labour and valet visits

In severe cases, pools may even need to be drained due to excessive cyanuric acid levels, staining, or water that simply cannot be economically recovered and it becomes necessary to ‘start all over’.

And while the water is sitting green, damage can quietly occur in the background.

Your Pool Equipment Still Needs Exercise

Modern pool systems are designed to operate consistently.

Pumps, heaters, chlorinators, automation systems, and dosing equipment all perform best when regularly circulating and maintained.

When systems sit idle for long periods:

  • seals can dry out
  • heaters could seize
  • sensors lose calibration
  • salt cells foul up
  • debris builds inside plumbing lines
  • stagnant water creates unnecessary strain on equipment

A healthy pool is all about continuous movement, filtration, and consistency.

Think of it a bit like leaving a car sitting in a paddock for six months and expecting it to fire up first pop without any issues.

Winter Is Actually One of the Best Times to Maintain Water Properly

Ironically, winter is often easier and cheaper to manage from a chemistry perspective.

Cooler water temperatures naturally slow algae growth and reduce chemical demand.

That means a well-maintained pool during winter typically requires:

  • less chlorine
  • less adjustment
  • less filtration time
  • less overall intervention

The key is consistency rather than complete shutdown.

At Auckland Inground Pools and The Pool Smith, we strongly recommend ongoing year-round servicing and water testing, even when the pool is not being actively used.

Prevention Will Always Be Cheaper Than Recovery

One of the biggest misconceptions in pool ownership is that stopping servicing saves money.

In reality, many green pool recoveries cost more in a few weeks than regular maintenance would have cost across the entire off-season.

More importantly, preventative care protects:

  • pool surfaces and plaster finishes
  • tile lines and grout
  • pumps and heating systems
  • automation equipment
  • water health and clarity
  • long-term asset value

A swimming pool is a significant investment in your home and lifestyle. Looking after it consistently is what keeps ownership enjoyable rather than stressful.

The Goal Is Simple – The Pool is ready to go when you are!

The best pool owners are not the ones spending huge money recovering pools every spring.

They are the ones who can walk outside on the first warm day of the season, pull back the cover, and enjoy crystal-clear water straight away ☀️

That comes from small, consistent care across the entire year rather than emergency panic station care once things have already gone wrong.

At Auckland Inground Pools and The Pool Smith, we believe great pool ownership should feel easy, predictable, enjoyable and a pleasure to look out to your backyard all year-round, rather than a costly battle when you are ready to commence swimming again for the season.
